What's your Pluto sign?
Your Pluto sign is the zodiac sign Pluto was passing through when you were born. Pluto moves so slowly that everyone born within a span of twelve to thirty years shares it, so astrologers read it as the mark of a generation: what your whole cohort was born into, and what it is here to dig up and remake.
Put in your birth date to find yours.
Your Pluto sign is your generation's. The part that's yours alone is which house Pluto sits in and how it talks to the rest of your chart, and your full chart shows that.
The Pluto generations
| Pluto sign | Born roughly |
|---|---|
| Pluto in Leo | 1938 to 1957 |
| Pluto in Virgo | 1957 to 1972 |
| Pluto in Libra | 1972 to 1984 |
| Pluto in Scorpio | 1984 to 1995 |
| Pluto in Sagittarius | 1995 to 2008 |
| Pluto in Capricorn | 2008 to 2024 |
| Pluto in Aquarius | 2024 to 2044 |
Those edges are fuzzy on purpose. Every time Pluto changes sign it crosses the line, backs up over it for a few months, then crosses again. Someone born in the spring of 1984 can be Pluto in Libra while a cousin born the autumn before is Pluto in Scorpio. If your birthday is anywhere near a boundary year, trust the calculator over the table.
Why Pluto moves so slowly
Pluto takes 248 years to go once around the Sun, so it spends a long time in each sign. Its orbit is also stretched into a long oval, which means it doesn't spend the same time in every sign. When it's close to the Sun it hurries through Scorpio in about twelve years. Out at the far end it lingers in Taurus for more than thirty.
That slowness is why astrologers give it the heavy themes: power, what's hidden, endings that clear the ground for something new. Pluto doesn't do small changes. Whatever sign it's in tends to describe what a generation tears down and rebuilds, often without noticing until it's done.
What your Pluto sign says about you, and what it doesn't
Your Pluto sign is real and it's shared with millions of people. On its own it says more about the world you grew up in than about you personally.
The personal part is the house. Pluto in the 10th house is a different life from Pluto in the 4th, even for two people born the same week. The house shows where in your life the digging-up happens: your work, your home, your money, your relationships. If Pluto also sits close to your Sun, Moon or rising sign, it becomes a loud voice in your chart rather than a background hum.
You need your birth time for houses. If you don't know it, you still get your Pluto sign and its aspects, and we'll say plainly what's missing.
Where the name came from
Pluto was found in February 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh, a 24-year-old at Lowell Observatory in Arizona. The name came from Venetia Burney, an eleven-year-old in Oxford, who suggested it over breakfast because it was the god of somewhere far away and dark and cold. We like to think of it less as the underworld and more the way she did: a small, far-off place worth going to look at.
Questions
Is my Pluto sign the same as my sun sign?
No. Your sun sign changes every month or so. Your Pluto sign changes every couple of decades, so you share it with nearly everyone your age.
Can I have Pluto in a sign that isn't on the list?
Yes, if you were born before 1938 (Pluto in Cancer, or Gemini before 1914) or after 2044 (Pluto in Pisces). The calculator covers 1880 to 2100.
What's a Pluto return?
It's Pluto coming back to where it was when you were born, which takes 248 years. Nobody lives to have one. Countries can: the United States had its first in 2022, which is a big part of why Pluto has been in the news.
