What's my North Node?

Your North Node is the sign the Moon's north node was in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your direction of growth: the qualities that feel unfamiliar and a little uncomfortable, and that you're drawn toward anyway. Your South Node, always in the opposite sign, is what comes easily, the habits you fall back on. Put in your birth date to find both.

Everyone born within about a year and a half of you shares your node signs. The personal part is the house, which needs your birth time, and your whole chart shows it.

What the nodes are

The Moon's orbit is tilted slightly against the Sun's path through the sky. The two places where they cross are the lunar nodes: the north node, where the Moon crosses heading north, and the south node, where it crosses heading south. Eclipses happen when the Sun and Moon line up near these points, which is why the nodes have always been watched closely.

The nodes aren't objects. They're points, and they drift slowly backwards through the zodiac, spending about eighteen months in each sign and coming full circle every 18.6 years. We use the mean node, the smoothed average position most astrology software shows by default.

How to read the axis

Think of the two nodes as a line through your chart. The South Node end is familiar ground: skills you have without trying, the role you slip into in a new group, what you do under stress. Nothing is wrong with it. The trouble is staying there.

The North Node end is the stretch. It usually feels awkward at first, and people often avoid it for years. Leaning toward it, a little at a time, is where astrologers say life opens up. The two ends work together; growth doesn't mean abandoning the South Node, just not hiding in it.

Questions

What's a nodal return?

The nodes come back to where they were at your birth every 18.6 years, around ages 18 to 19, 37 and 56. Many people notice those years as turning points.

Is the North Node my destiny?

It's read as a direction, not a fate. It describes what you grow by reaching for, and you choose how far to reach.

Mean node or true node?

The true node wobbles back and forth around the mean node by a degree or two. Most of the time both are in the same sign. We use the mean node.
