What retrograde actually means

Mercury doesn't really reverse. It overtakes the Earth on its smaller, faster orbit, and for about three weeks, three or four times a year, it appears from here to slide backwards against the stars. Astrologers have always read that backwards look as meaningful: a planet turned inward.

Mercury is the planet of thinking, talking, learning and moving information around. Retrograde in a birth chart, it describes a mind that works on its own schedule.

What a natal Mercury retrograde is like

People born with Mercury retrograde tend to think before they speak, sometimes long after the conversation has moved on. The perfect reply arrives in the shower an hour later. They often learn better on their own than in a classroom, need to go back over things to really absorb them, and reach conclusions other people didn't see coming because they took a different route to get there.

That inward turn is a strength. Writers, researchers and anyone whose work involves revising, reflecting or rethinking tend to make good use of it. The cost is being misread as slow or quiet, when the processing is just happening inside.

It's not the same as the Mercury retrograde in the news. Being born with it doesn't make your life a string of crossed wires. Many people with natal Mercury retrograde say the public retrogrades feel calmer to them than to everyone else, since the rest of the world is finally working at their speed.

Born at the turn

If you were born on a day Mercury stationed, turning retrograde or direct, Mercury was standing almost still in the sky. Astrologers read that as an emphasised Mercury: thinking and communication become a central thread in the chart, whichever way it was turning.
