What moon phase were you born under?

Put in your birth date and we'll show you the Moon as it looked the day you were born: how much of it was lit, whether it was growing or shrinking, and which of the eight phases of the lunation cycle you were born in.

The phase comes from the angle between the Sun and the Moon, worked out with the same ephemeris we use for birth charts. Your whole chart shows exactly where both were.

Why the phase matters in a chart

Your sun sign and moon sign describe two parts of you. Your moon phase describes how they relate: how far the Moon had travelled from the Sun when you were born. A new moon birth has the Sun and Moon together in the sky. A full moon birth has them on opposite sides of the Earth, the Moon fully lit by the Sun behind you.

Astrologers following Dane Rudhyar read the month-long cycle from new moon to new moon as a story with eight chapters, about three and a half days each. The chapter you were born in describes your instinctive way of meeting life.

New Moon

Born within about three and a half days after the new moon. You act on instinct and start things before anyone else sees the point of them. The cost is that you can be hard to explain, even to yourself.

Crescent

The Moon is a thin, growing sliver. You push forward against old habits and other people's doubts, and your energy is in the struggle to get something new off the ground.

First Quarter

Half the Moon is lit and growing. You're a builder who thrives on challenge and decisive action. You clear the way for what you want, sometimes by knocking down what's in it.

Gibbous

The Moon is more than half full and still growing. You're a refiner: you want to improve, perfect and understand. You ask "how can this be better?" more than anyone around you.

Full Moon

The Moon is fully or almost fully lit. You see things clearly, especially other people, and your life tends to be about relationships and bringing things into the open. Feelings run high and visible.

Disseminating

The Moon has just started to shrink. You're a sharer and a teacher by nature: what you've learned, you want to pass on. You have a lot to say and say it well.

Last Quarter

Half the Moon is lit and shrinking. You question old structures and beliefs, including your own. You're a reformer who changes direction when something no longer fits, and you don't look back much.

Balsamic

The last thin crescent before the new moon. You're reflective, visionary and a little apart from your time, often working toward something that won't be understood until later. Endings and letting go come naturally to you.

Questions

Why does the calculator say my birth time decides?

The Moon changes phase every three and a half days or so, and on the day it does, the hour you were born puts you on one side or the other.

Is a full moon birth special?

About one birth in eight falls in the Full Moon phase, and people born within a day of the exact full moon have the Sun and Moon almost exactly opposite. Astrologers read that as a life lived between two strong pulls.

Does the phase look the same everywhere?

How full the Moon is doesn't depend on where you are. From the Southern Hemisphere the lit side is flipped, so a waxing Moon is lit on the left. Our picture shows it as seen from the north.
