Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1 lifted off from Site 1 at Baikonur (Tyuratam), Kazakhstan, at 06:07 UTC on 12 April 1961, the first human spaceflight. It was 11:07 at the launch site, and that sky gives an Aries Sun, a Pisces Moon and Cancer rising, with Mars almost exactly on the rising degree.
When Gagarin launched, the Sun stood at 22° Aries in the 10th house, high overhead in the late morning. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, the sign of beginnings, nerve and going first. Mercury and Venus were in Aries in the 10th house too, Venus two degrees from the Sun. The Sun also makes a trine to Uranus in Leo, a third of a degree from exact, linking that pioneering Aries light to the planet of breakthroughs.
Cancer was rising at 18° at Gagarin's launch, and Mars sat almost exactly on that degree, a fifth of a degree away. Mars is the planet of courage and drive, and on the horizon it's one of the strongest placements a chart can have. In Cancer it's a protective sort of bravery, the kind that carries home along with it. Venus in Aries squares both Mars and the rising degree, adding a lively spark.
The Moon was at 12° Pisces in Vostok 1's chart, in the 9th house, the part of the sky for long journeys, wide horizons and wonder. Pisces is the sign of imagination and the boundless, and the Moon makes a trine to Neptune in Scorpio. The Midheaven is in Pisces as well, while Jupiter in Aquarius and Saturn at the last degree of Capricorn share the 7th house.
